Illustration for the digital magazine The Genoeser This magazine, distributed exclusively online, is the Genoese version of The New Yorker. Genoa is the city where I live, and with its vast historic center, it too is suffering the disastrous effects of mass tourism—at the expense of its residents. Apartments are increasingly listed on Airbnb, and where once there were local shops, now only places to eat and drink are opening. The narrow alleyways are overrun by cruise ship tourists, and everything feels fake, stripped of its soul. The future looks bleak: a city with no permanent residents, just a hollow stage set for visitors. It reminds me of ruined cities swallowed by jungle, overtaken by vegetation and time. In the bottom left corner, there is a padlock containing the keys to a tourist rental—symbolizing the social plague of short-term rentals, the real ruin of our cities.
